在香港，每個月都有成蟲螢火蟲出沒，包括溫度最低的一月和二月，氣溫往往降至攝氏10度左右，依然有4個品種的成蟲在活動。之後，活動的成蟲螢火蟲品種數目續漸增加，直至五月和六月達到高峰，有13個品種；最炎熱的七月和八月有7個品種；九月至12月則有11個品種。濕季 (四月至九月)主要是熠螢亞科Luciolinae的成蟲活躍；旱季(十月至三月)主要是螢亞科Lampyrinae和凹眼螢科Rhagophthamidae的成蟲活躍。

約一半數本地品種的幼蟲都未有紀錄；所有本地品種皆未有完整的成長時間。多數品種的成蟲活躍時間較短，大約數個星期，可以假設是一年一代的；有些品種的成蟲活躍時間較長，長達半年，則有可是一年多代，例子包括雷氏螢和米埔屈翅螢。

There are adult fireflies flying in all the months in Hong Kong, including the coldest months of January and February when the temperature is only about 10° C . Four species fly in these two cold months. The number of flying species then increases gradually until May and June in which there are 13 flying species. In July and August (hottest months in a year), there are seven species flying. From September to December (autumn and early winter), there are 11 species flying. The hot and wet period (April to September) is dominated by Luciolinae; the colder and dry period is dominated by Lampyrinae and Rhagophthamidae.

Larva of about half of the local species have not been reported yet. None of the Hong Kong firefly species has a full development timetable been reported. Most local species have very short flight period - several weeks, may be assumed to be univoltine - one generation per year. Some species with very long flight period - more than half a year, could be Multivoltine - two or more generations per year. Examples are Aquatica leii and Pteroptyx maipo
