模式一：日行性，以費洛蒙溝通 ，雄螢的觸角通常發達。
模式二：夜行性，無翅雌螢發光，能飛的雄螢不發光或只發微弱的光，雄螢的觸角發達。大概是雌螢用光吸引雄螢前來，再以費洛蒙確定身份 ，例外的是大帽山扁螢只有短小絲狀觸角。
模式三：夜行性，無翅雌螢發光，能飛的雄螢發出顯著的光，雄螢的觸角發達，較多遇見；雌螢的觸角不發達，在野外甚少遇見。大概是雄螢用光誘發雌螢發出回應光訊號，趨近雌螢後再以費洛蒙確認身份。
模式四：夜行性，能飛的雄螢發出獨特閃光模式，雌螢亦發出閃光。雌螢不一定能飛，例如 Luciola nr. nicollieri；雄螢不一定是誘發閃光的一方，例如穹宇螢的雄螢等到雌螢發光才會發光。雄螢雌螢的觸角皆為線狀；可能没有費洛蒙或者費洛蒙只發揮很少作用或無作用，雄螢雌螢以獨特閃光模式確認身份。基本上所有熠螢亞科的成員都屬這一類。
Sex communication of Hong Kong fireflies can be categorized into 4 different modes:
Mode 1: Diurnal fireflies fly during daylight and use pheromones to communicate. Antennae of males of this group are usually well developed.
Mode 2: Nocturnal fireflies with flightless females emitting light. Flying male is either non-luminous or produces only very weak light. The male antennae of this group are well developed. Presumably, the female uses light to attract males and sex pheromones for the confirmation of species identity. A variant is Lamprigera taimoshana, male of which only have short filiform antennae.
Mode 3: Nocturnal fireflies with flightless females emitting light. Flying males produce prominent light. Antennae of males of this group are well developed. Males are much more frequently encountered; females, with less developed antennae are seldom recorded in wild. Presumably, the males produce light to induce and locate the female’s response, and then confirm species identity by the sex pheromones.
Mode 4: Nocturnal flying males emit species-typical flash patterns, females also produce flashing light. Females could be flightless as in Luciola nr. nicollieri. Males need not to be the initiator. For Pygoluciola qingyu, males do not flash until female flash occurs. Antennae of male and female are filiform. Possibly, sex pheromones do not exist or play little or no role in sexual communication. Males and females identify each other by their unique flash patterns. Presumably, all members of Luciolinae fall into this category.
