螢火蟲幼蟲乃捕食性，考慮到螢火蟲幼蟲移動速度有限，而成蟲的飛行能力相對較低(很多品種的雌成蟲甚至不能飛)，一個品種的分佈應該很大程度地受限於適合其獵物(主要是陸生螺、蛞蝓、和蚯蚓)生長的環境，或合適的水體 - 對水生螢火蟲而言。

低地天然林區有最高的螢火蟲品種數目，共有14個品種，當中5個品種只在這種生境出現；高地林區孕育7個品種；估計主要因為這兩種生境的合適獵物多樣性和密度都較高。植林區只紀錄3種螢火蟲，這種林區只單一種植幾種從澳洲引進的植物，較不適合螢火蟲幼蟲獵物的生長。

高地草地也有4個品種，有3種的幼蟲主要獵食蚯蚓，而這些草地生境的蚯蚓密度確實相當高。

黃頭脈翅螢和邊褐端黑螢較喜歡低地草地，而且通常大量出現，寬緣窗螢在常見於低地草地，此螢火蟲分佈廣泛，而且常在人為改造的生境找到，包括農地、廢棄農地、魚塘和村落，反而較少在較天然的生境中找到。

米埔屈翅螢只在紅樹林生境活動，紅樹林生境除了米埔屈翅螢，還會找到寬緣窗螢。

在溪流生境，穹宇螢數量很多，而且很常見，縱使穹宇螢的幼蟲並非水生。真正水生的雷氏螢喜歡水流緩慢又淺水的濕地生境。

Firefly larvae are known to be predatory. Considering the apparently low mobility of firefly larvae and the relatively low flying ability of firefly adults (female adults of many species are unable to fly), the distribution range of a firefly species should be largely restricted by the environments suitable for growth of the food source, which is mainly terrestrial snails, slugs and earthworms, or suitable bodies of water if the larvae are aquatic.

Lowland natural forests support the highest number of firefly species. 14 species are found in lowland natural forest, of which five species are found exclusively in this kind of habitat. Montane forests also support seven species. This may be attributable to the possibly higher diversity and density of firefly larval preys in the forests. Only three species are found in the plantation forests which are usually dominated by a few alien tree species introduced from Australia, and this environment may be less favourable for the larval prey.

Montane grasslands also have four species, larvae of three species are earthworm feeders and dense earthworm populations are found in this type of habitat.

Curtos fulvovapitalis and Abscondita terminalis prefer lowland grasslands. They usually occur in mass number. Pyrocoelia analis is also an inhabitant of lowland grassland. This species is widely distributed and is always found in artificially modified habitats such as farmland, abandoned farmland, fishpond or village, but seldom recorded in more natural habitats.

Besides Pteroptyx maipo, which is exclusively found in mangrove habitat, Pyrocoelia analis is also frequently recorded.

In freshwater stream habitat, Pygoluciola qingyu is very abundant and frequently seen, even though the larva of which is not aquatic. True aquatic species - Aquatica leii prefers wetlands with shallow and slow running water.
